Directory Submission Tips
Get your website indexed in a Directory and rank higher with Search Engines.
Submitting your website to Yahoo! Directory and Open Directory Project is easier than you think.
Directories should be an important part of a good search marketing plan. Directories get a lot of traffic because the categories make them easy to navigate. In addition to the traffic from the directories themselves, major search engines get some of their search results from directories. The search engines know that your website has something to do with its category. They list your website in the results when someone does a search for a topic related to your website's category. A listing in a directory can improve your ranking with search engines.

Submitting your website to Directories
Directories have limited databases, so they do not go out looking for websites to index like search engines do. Automated submission programs do not work with directories. The only way to get your website listed is to submit it to the directories manually.
Submitting your website to Yahoo! Directory
All commercial sites have to pay $299.00 each year to be indexed. This fee guarantees that your website will be considered for inclusion in the directory within seven days. If your site is a non-commercial site, you can submit it for free but there is no guarantee when they will consider your website for the database.
So here is how you submit your website to Yahoo! Directory:
- Grab your credit card and go to http://dir.yahoo.com.
- Scroll down the list of categories and click on the best category for your website.
- When the page loads, click on the Suggest a Site link.
- You will need to get a Yahoo! ID and password if you do not already have one.
- Then enter a description of your website, contact information and your URL address in the appropriate areas.
- Wait 7 days and check to see if they indexed your website.
Submitting your website to Open Directory Project
The Open Directory is a free service, but it comes with a few drawbacks. There is no guarantee that your website will be indexed. And the submission forms don't always work. But the advantage of the Open Directory is that is used by Google and hundreds of other sites for search results. If you submit and your website doesn't get indexed, it is well worth it to try again.
Here is how you submit to the Open Directory:
- Go to www.dmoz.com.
- Click on the best category for your website.
- Click on the best subcategory for your website.
- Click on the Suggest URL link.
- Type in your website's URL, the title, a 25-30 word description of your website and your email address.
